Abstract
1278123 Copying by scanning WERKSPOOR-AMSTERDAM NV 1 April 1969 [2 April 1968] 17089/69 Heading H4F In a system wherein a single master pattern 2 on a rotating cylinder 1 is repeatedly scanned by a photo-electric element 3 moving parallel to the cylinder axis, and a half-tone screen printing forme on a cylinder 6 is synchronously scanned under an engraving element 5, controlled by signals from element 3, to provide a repeating pattern, there is a delay between the time at which a signal is delivered to start scanning and engraving and the time at which these actually commence, so that part of the line being scanned e.g. the first line 7 of master 2, is not engraved e.g. the first line 8 of the second pattern on cylinder 6. Such a line is therefore moved over its entire length twice under the element 5, on one scan being in operational contact with the element over at least a first part of its length, and on the other scan being in operational contact with the element over a final part of its length, the first and final parts being complementary or overlapping parts of the line. In a preferred embodiment, the first and last lines of master pattern 2 are identical. At the end of the scan, engraving only the first part of the last line, (the intended first line 8 of the next pattern) a control signal renders element 5 inoperative and element 3 returns to the first line 7 of the master. At the commencement of the next scan, element 5 returns to the part-engraved line 8 to complete the engraving thereof. Any overlap of scans is said to be unimportant since the scanning action is identical in both cases.
