Abstract

1277951 Packaging machine UNION CAMP CORP 20 June 1969 [21 June 1968] 31391/69 Heading B8C A packaging machine, for use with wrappers of the kind having window pockets of transparent synthetic plastics material, in which the machine has a transport mechanism 30 for simultaneously picking up one card 36 having one or more transparent windows 42 from a stack 16 and transporting it to a heater 32 for heating thereby while picking up an already heated card from the heater and transporting it to an indexing mechanism 34 wherein the heated card is moved sequentially through a series of steps at which further operations are performed on the card to convert it into a completed package. As shown, each card 36 is formed with a pair of apertures 40 covered with transparent plastics material and is moved from the stack 16 on to the heater 32 and from the heater to the indexing mechanism 34 by pairs of suction cups 86, 86 carried on crank-arms 66, 68, which are partially rotated, first in one direction and then in the other direction by a connecting chain 54 driven by an hydraulic piston-andcylinder 48, 50, 52. The indexing mechanism 34 comprises a rotatable disc 104 carrying four forming dies 106. The heated card is deposited on the first die 106 where the windows are drawn in cavities 108 by suction, the disc is rotated through 90 degrees in the counterclockwise direction adjacent a loading station 113 where an article is loaded into the outermost cavity 108 and the card is folded over to enclose the article, the disc is rotated through a further 90 degrees to a position beneath a dielectric sealing press 114 and the disc is rotated through a final 90 degrees to a take-off mechanism comprising pairs of suction members 121 carried by an arm 119 operated through gearing 116, 117 simultaneously with the arms 66, 68. The operation of the suction cups 86 and 121 and the movements of the disc 104 are automatically controlled by hydraulic means described in detail with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
