Abstract

1277803 Combing machines E W CLARK 7 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969 28 Feb 1970] 45769/69 and 9755/70 Heading DIN A combing machine, Fig. 2, comprises a rotary circular ring 3 mounted on a bed ring 1 by ball gearings 2. Fibres are fed inwardly over the ring top surface by feed rollers 11, 12 to form a fringe overhanging the inner edge of the ring 3. The fibres are clamped here by nip blocks 26 depressed by a fixed cam bar 33 as the ring 3 rotates. Initial combing is performed by a cylindrical comb 37 against a brush 26a attached to the nip block as the fibres are carried past it. The axis of the comb 35 is tilted so that its surface contour conforms substantially to the inner edge of the ring 3. Comb blocks 37 now descend by means of cam bar 33a and their pins 37a penetrate the fibre fringe, the nip blocks 26 then rise and the fibre is carried past drawing-off rollers (39), Fig. 1 not shown, and is conveyed to a rotary funnel (42) by belts (40) to form a sliver. The fibre feed rollers may be driven by a wheel 17 passing over a rack 15 or alternatively by a friction wheel or a ratchet and pawl, or the feed may be effected by a pivoted box which is raised while the fibre end is clamped by the nip blocks 26. Fibre feed may be aided by air fed through holes 19 and or a straightening plate (not shown). Noil is removed from the cylinder comb 35 by a brush 36 which is cleaned by a carding roller and doffer or the noil may be sucked off the comb 35 by a suction nozzle. The comb blocks 37 are denoiled by the brush 26a attached to nip blocks 26. A plurality of drawing off rollers 39 may be employed set at different distances from the ring to selectively draw off different fibre lengths. The ring 3 is provided with internal teeth 4 engaging a motor driven pinion. The working cycle may be repeated more than once in a complete revolution of the ring 3 e.g. three times. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5a, the ring 3 has a grooved upper surface and the nip blocks 126 have three rows of pins which descend into the grooves. After initial feeding as described above the fibres are lifted from the ring by plough blades running in the grooves and deposited on a straightening plate. Having traversed the straightening plate the fibres are gripped by the nip blocks 126 and initially combed by a cylindrical comb. During the drawing off stage the nip blocks partially rise, Fig. 5d not shown, and the pins (126a) control the draft. In a further modification the top comb blocks are dispensed with thus leaving an uncombed portion of fibre between the nip blocks and the cylindrical comb; this is eliminated by a slight reverse feed prior to drawing off which is achieved by a plough blade pushing the fibre into a groove, Fig. 9f not shown. The noil is removed from the nip block pins in the two last mentioned embodiments by inverted plough blades, and the drawing off rollers may be reciprocated vertically to avoid local wear. The nip blocks may be attached to pivoted arms as in Fig. 13 not shown. The apparatus may be heated by steam in a hollow bed ring 1.
