Abstract

1277748 Proximity detectors ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd 2 Sept 1969 43316/69 Heading G1N [Also in Division H4] The proximity of an object is indicated by apparatus including a microwave generator connected to one end of a transmission line 26, the other end 34 of which has its impedance affected by the proximity of an object 36, and means for detecting a change in the amplitude of the signal reflected from the end 34 of the line. As shown, the generator includes a Gunn-effect diode D1 mounted in a waveguide 10, and the detector comprises a mixer diode D2. On sensing of an object the level of the D.C. output of the diode D2 is changed and this output may be applied to a pulse shaper and oscilloscope and/or counter. In this manner, the frequency of rotation of the blades of a turbine may be determined. The transmission line is preferably coaxial having a rigid, temperature-resistant end 32, and in alternatives the Gunn-effect diode D1 may be connected in series with the transmission line, which may be a waveguide, or the generator may be a microwave oscillator.
