Abstract

1277650 Photographic reversal processes for producing metal images MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 18 July 1969 [19 July 1968] 36388/69. Heading G2C [Also in Division C7] Positive metal images are produced by (i) imagewise exposing to light a material containing a lightsensitive layer capable on exposure of reducing metal compounds to metal nuclei (ii) before or after the imagewise exposure adding a compound of a metal more noble than silver such as palladium or platinum to the light-sensitive layer (iii) treating the exposed layer with a solution of di- or trimethylamine borane, di- or tri-ethylamine borane, t-butylamine borane, pyridine borane, morpholine borane, sodium borohydride, lithium aluminium hydride or hydrazine to chemically reduce the metal compound in the non-exposed areas to metal nuclei and (iv) simultaneously or subsequently electrolessly plating the chemically reduced areas with a non-noble metal. Specified light-sensitive compounds are ferric salts or diazosulphorates which may be mixed with a vinyl polymer, polyethylene glycol and palladium or platinum chloride or a complex of Pd or Pt with a nitrilopolyacetic acid or diaminocyclohexanetetra acetic acid, and applied to a polymeric support which may be subbed. Alternatively, the light-sensitive compound without a binder may be applied to a saponified cellulose ester support and imagewise exposed before the metal compound is added to the layer. The electroless plating solution may contain compounds of Ni, Co, Cu, Cr and Fe. The plated image may be reinforced by a second plating treatment (e.g. Cu or Ni image).
