Abstract
1277454 Mixing in tortuous passages DART INDUSTRIES Inc 6 June 1969 [6 June 1968] 28831/69 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A self-purging valve, which is capable of dispensing two different pressurised fluids and which is particularly suitable for dispensing antiperspirants, starches, paint sprays and hot foam shave lather, comprises a main housing portion 10 which is retained by a portion 24 of a cap of a main container, (14, Fig. 1, not shown), a first fluid inlet passage 54 opening into a first seat 52, a second fluid inlet passage 72 opening directly into the interior of the housing, a resilient washer 32 forming a second seat 50, and first and second valve members 38 and 40 respectively, the two valve members being biased by a spring 46 into engagement with their respective seats. The outflow passage from the housing is formed in the second valve member 50 and is comprised by a plurality of passages 62 and a passage 60 axially extending along a stem 34 of the second valve member 40, the outflow passage being closed from the housing interior as long as the second valve member is in engagement with its seat 50. In operation, stem 34 is manually tilted until a projection 68 on the second valve member 40 just engages the wall 66 of a recess 64 in the first valve member, this permitting flow of the second fluid to take place from passage 72 into the axial passage 60, (Fig. 4, not shown). Further tilting of the stem causes consequential tilting of the first valve member 38 with respect to it seat and hence permits the first fluid to enter the housing wherein it mixes with the second fluid prior to entering the axial outlet passage 60, (Fig. 5, not shown). Upon decreasing the degree of tilting of the stem 60, the first valve member 38 is seated prior to the second valve member 40 so permitting the housing to be purged by the second fluid entering via passage 72. In use, the first inlet 54 may be connected to a collapsible bag containing the first fluid and being disposed within the main container which communicates at all times with passage 72 and which contains the second fluid, such second fluid being itself pressurised and so pressurising the first fluid. Alternatively, the main container may contain both a liquid and a vapour phase with the first inlet 54 being connected to a dip tube which extends to the bottom of the liquid phase, (Fig. 14 not shown). In a modification (Figs. 7 to 15, not shown) the arrangement is similar to that described above except that only the second valve member is tiltable with the first valve member being displaceable axially off the housing upon sufficient tilting of the second valve member.
