Abstract

1277378 Ethylene polymer compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 Feb 1970 [3 Feb 1969] 4909/70 Heading C3P A process for compounding curable ethylene polymers comprises (a) fluxing polyethylene or an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and mixing a mineral filler therewith while fluxing, (b) adding an organosilane or organosiloxane to the resulting mixture and (c) adding a curing agent to the resulting mixture at a temperature below the incipient curing temperature. Specified fillers are silica, aluminium silicate, calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, alumina and titanium dioxide. The silicon compound may be an alkoxy silane or cyclotetrasiloxane, many suitable compounds being listed. Preferred curing agents are tertiary peroxides. Examples describe the preparation of compositions comprising titanium dioxide, dicumyl peroxide and polytrimethyldihydroquinoline or 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thiobis- (6-t-butyl-m-cresol) together with (1, 2 and 6) polyethylene and vinyl tris-(2-methoxyethoxy)- silane, (3) polyethylene and tetramethyltetravinyl cyclotetrasiloxane, (4) polyethylene and octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane and (5) ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer and vinyl tris-(2- methoxyethoxy)silane; and comprising polyethylene, aluminium silicate, polytrimethyldihydroquinoline, Bisphenol A epoxy acrylate, vinyl tris-(2-methoxyethoxy)silane and dicumyl peroxide. The compositions are suitable for insulating electrical conductors by extrusion coating.
