Abstract

1277373 Carboxylation process BP CHEMICALS Ltd 7 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970 12 May 1970] 2169/70 and 22911/70 Heading C2C Olefines are carboxylated by reacting a mixture of olefine and carbon monoxide at elevated temperature in the absence of added hydrogen halide and with a rhodium carbonyl or compound giving rise to such a carbonyl as a catalyst. Ethylene, propylene, butene-1, -2, and isobutene and hexene-1 are mentioned and the catalysts may be rhodium carbonyl halide dimer, tetrarhodium dodecacarbonyl or a mixture of rhodium acetate and fluorboric acid. The reaction is in liquid phase preferably in a mixture of water and solvent such as acetone. Examples describe the preparation of propionic acid and propionates.
