Abstract
1277226 Sheet forming BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 2 Oct 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 48508/69 Heading B5A An apparatus for forming seat covers for motor cars comprises a roll 1 of expanded vinyl sheet which is intermittently fed by means of a chain conveyer (7), having spikes (8), Fig. 3, not shown, to a hot air preheater 3, a vacuum forming mould 4, and a cutting unit 5. Three rolls 1 are supported on arms 40 rotatably mounted in a frame 38, and in order to maintain the supply each roll is joined to the preceding one by adhesive tape. The sheet is fed by rollers 29 on to a load sensitive platform 32 having a switch 34 controlling a drive motor 31. The rollers 29 can apply french chalk to the sheet. From the platform 32 the sheet is picked up by the conveyer (7) and passed through the preheater 3. Mould 4 has a two-part clamping frame 11, the upper part of which can be raised about a vertically movable hinge 15, and panel electric heaters 12 which can be moved laterally to extend above and below the sheet. The sheet is stretched by blowing air, before a vacuum form tool 14 is raised to an operative position, where upon the upper surface of the sheet is cooled by spraying with water and air. Each time the upper part of the clamping frame is lowered it actuates a punch 17 to pierce a hole in the sheet, and when the hole is aligned with a photo-cell 18, the drive from a motor 19 driving the conveyer (7) is interrupted to index the sheet in the correct position. The cutting unit 5 has a platen 21 with an endless cutter blade 24. It also incorporates a flute welder. A guillotine severs the residual sheet which falls into a receptacle 36. The flute welder can be disposed between the mould 4 and cutting unit 5.
