Abstract

1276918 Polyethylene - 1,2 - diphenoxyethane - 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- dicarboxylate fibres ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 1 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 48195/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A process for the preparation of polyethylene- 1,2 - diphenoxyethane - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxylate fibres comprises melt-spinning and then stretching the homo- or copolymer so that the birefringence is from 0À1 to 0À25 and then further stretching the fibres obtained by from 3% to 40% preferably at a temperature ranging from room temperature to 175‹ C. The copolymer may be formed by adding preferably up to 25 mole per cent based on the polyethylene-1,2- diphenoxyethane - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxylate of a copolymerizable component of at least one compound having at least one functional group with ester formation capability to the polymerization mixture before or after termination of the polymerization. The copolymerizable component may be carboxylic acids, hydroxy compounds, hydroxycarboxylic acids, hydroxy acids and their derivatives and may be in particular carbamic acid, oxalic acid, adipic acid, terephthalic acid, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, sulphonyl - dibenzoic acid, sodium - 3,5 - carboxy - benzene sulphonate, p - benzyl - oxyphenyl acetic acid, trimellitic acid, pyromellitic acid, 1,2-propylene glycol, 1,4 - butane diol, diethylene glycol 1,6- hexane diol, p-xylylene glycol, 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol, 1,4 - bis - 2 - hydroxyethoxybenzene, 2,2 - bis - p - 2 - hydroxy - ethoxylphenyl propane, polyalkylene, glycol, pentaerythritol, glycerine, p-phenylene-bis-dimethyl siloxane, glycol acids or p-hydroxy-benzoic acid. In the examples the polyester is extruded at 280‹ to 295‹ C, stretched in a one or two step process at 50‹ to 140‹ C. at a draw ratio of from 1À2 : 1 to 3À5 : 1 and further stretched at from 6% to 20% at 100‹ to 200‹ C. on a hot plate, in steam or boiling water. The yarns and fabrics produced according to the invention have improved crease resistance and flexing abrasion resistance.
