Abstract

1276552 Ultrasonic cleaning apparatus W R GRACE & CO 16 June 1969 [3 Oct 1968] 57054/70 Divided out of 1276551 Heading A4F [Also in Division G2] Apparatus for developing exposed photopolymerizable materials comprises a vessel containing developer consisting of a detergent solution, means for energizing the developer by ultrasonic energy, control means responsive to the concentration of the detergent solution and means actuated by said control means for delivering developer from a reservoir to the developing vessel to restore the concentration of developer to a predetermined value. The developed material may be subsequently washed in a water spray bath and dried in a curtain of moving air. As shown, the exposed material 62 in frame 60 is placed in a processing tank 10 containing detergent 12 and the material is moved up and down during development. Ultrasonic vibrations of 18-40 kilocycles per second are produced by transducers 14, 16 and 18. The concentration of the developer is monitored by electrode 52 which transmits this to control 48 via line 54. If concentration is too low, control 48 opens valve 40 allowing water into reservoir 42 containing detergent and causing detergent to flow through pipe 46 to tank 10. The liquid level may be maintained in the tank by water from pipe 32 controlled by valve 34 and any excess being removed by overflow 36. The temperature of the detergent is maintained at the desired degree by heater 56. After development, the material is transferred to tank 66 and washed by spraying with water from sprays 68 and on opposite sides of the material; the water may be heated. Air jets 76 and 78 may be provided to remove most of the water from the material. The washed material is placed in tank 84 where it is dried by heated air from jets 86 and 88 on opposite sides of the material. The material may be mounted in frame 96, Fig.4, which contains oppositely disposed L-shaped members 108 and 104 which fit into holes in the material and on to frame members 100. A handle 102 is fitted on to members 104 and is tensioned by spring 106.
