Abstract

1276431 Trichloroethylene PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 8 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 16548/70 Heading C2C Trichloroethylene having an improved lower perchloroethylene content is prepared by reaction of oxygen, a feedstock of one or more hydrocarbon chlorides of formula wherein m is 2 to 6, k is from greater than 0 to 2, and n is from greater than 1À5m to (2m + k), and a scavenging amount of at least one C 1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon which under the reaction conditions chlorinates more readily than trichloroethylene, in the presence of a multivalent metal Deacon catalyst. Scavengers specified are methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, isobutane, ethylene, propylene, the butylenes, allene, the butadienes, acetylene and methyl acetylene. The scavenger is normally used in an amount up to 12% wt. of the total organic feed material. The oxygen may be pure oxygen or obtained from air, oxygen-enriched air, or mixtures thereof with inert gases. Catalysts specified are halides of copper, iron and chromium, optionally in admixture with alkali or alkaline earth metal halides, the exemplified catalyst being a cupric chloride-potassium chloride mixture. Catalyst supports specified are silica, alumina, fuller's earth, calcined fuller's earth, kieselguhr, pumice and diatomaceous earth. Fixed or fluidized catalyst beds may be used.
