Abstract

1276300 Air filter SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd 14 Aug 1969 [21 Aug 1968] 39973/68 Heading BIT [Also in Division B5] An air filter for use in ventilation, for the intake of a compressor or for the intake, or breather of the crank case or rocker box, of an I.C. engine comprises a plurality of layers of net, made by biaxial stretching of polyethylene, polyamide or polypropylene sheet previously formed with a regular pattern of indentations on one or both sides. The annular element shown comprises two strips of such net, made as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown), which are crimped respectively axially and transversely by passing between heated grooved wheels before being rolled up. Other modes of crimping are illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) and an annular element could comprise a single strip of chevron crimped net which is folded along its axis before rolling, possibly round a supporting coil or sleeve of metal or plastics. Filtering flow could be radially or axially through such an element. Flat elements (Figs. 7, 11, not shown) may similarly be made by folding a single sheet several times or joining several sheets. The ends or edges of elements may have their sheets or layers joined by adhesive, heat sealing or sewing. Bonded fibre filtering materials may be supported on or between the layers of net. Elements may be located in housings (Figs. 10, 12, not shown) or in conduits (Figs. 8, 13, not shown).
