Abstract

1276272 Bimetallic coin or token FRANKLIN MINT Inc 12 March 1971 7106/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division G4] A bimetallic coin, token, medallion, gambling chip or commemorative coin 10 comprises a layer of aluminium or aluminium alloy 16 sandwiched between layers of stainless steel 18, 20. The aluminium 16 forms 80-95% of the total coin thickness and allows for stretching and bending of the stainless steel 18, 20 for embossments 12, 14, the aluminium undergoing the bulk of the deformation. The stainless steel and aluminium have substantially the same light reflective properties, and the coin 10 has a milled edge 22. The stainless steel is clad to the aluminium in sheet form by heat and pressure, typically by rolling at 20,000 p.s.i. and 850‹ F.; a suitable cladding method is described in U.S. Patent Specification 2,782,498.
