Abstract

1275988 Isolators WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 18 Nov 1969 [22 Nov 1968] 56380/69 Heading H1W An isolator for given frequency microwaves employing the properties of a gyromagnetic material, preferably ferrite 16, 17, which fills a conductively bounded channel or wave-guide, has applied a steady magnetic field H DC with a field gradient across the channel such that the field strength varies from a value less than to a value greater than the field producing gyromagnetic resonance for the material, and the microwaves are applied with their electric vector transverse to the field gradient. The field H DC is stated to distort the magnetic field of the microwave within the ferrite such that the longitudinal and transverse components are equal in amplitude in a relatively broad region that substantially coincides with the region of resonance. In combination with a microwave strip line an isolator channel may be disposed between the centre conductor and one or each ground plane and as in Fig. 1 the ferrite is bounded by the ground planes 10 and 11 and by side partitions 13 and 14 and is divided by a conductive central divider 15 connected to the centre conductor 12 of the strip line. Capacitative stubs 18, 19 are provided to improve the impedance match. In further embodiments the ferrite is bounded by a conductive foil and may be coupled to the centre conductor 12 by a dielectric material.
