Abstract

127,595. Brosius, E. E. Jan. 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Discharging.-Clay-guns for plugging furnace tapping-holes are mounted so as to permit of angular movement in relation to the carrier in order to allow the apparatus to be applied to furnaces the structure of which would otherwise interfere with the motion. The clay gun 6, of usual construction, is suspended from the end of a boom 7 which is carried by a vertical shaft 8 rotatably supported by a bracket 9 attached to one of the columns 5 supporting the furnace. The gun is provided with a trolly rail 10 engaged by a roller 12 on a bracket 13, which swivels in a bearing 15 attached to the end of the boom (Fig. 5). A link 18 is connected at one end to a rod 17 carried at one side of the bracket 13, and at the other to a member 19 fixed on the bracket 9. As the gun is swung from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the link 18 causes it to rotate about the axis of the swivel bracket 13, the end of the gun thus taking a path such as is indicated by the chain line in Fig. 1. When the gun is over the trough 4, the nozzle is depressed, owing to the action of a lever 26 fulcrumed on an arm 28 carried bv the shaft 8. One end ot this lever contacts with a cam-plate 30 towards the end of the motion, and brings it to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Tho lever thus pulls on a flexible member 24 attached to it, the other end of which, after passing over a pulley 23 carried by the rod 17, is attached to the rear part of the gun at 21, thus tilting the gun. Mechanism, part of which is shown at 31, 32, 32<a>, which may be of a similar form to that shown in Specification 127,597, is provided to hold the gun in its operative position at the tapping-hole.
