1275602 Packaging coil strip BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 10 March 1970 [1 May 1969] 22275/68 Heading B8C] Coils of sheet steel 2 to be packaged are transferred, one at a time, by an overhead transport, 8 from a platform 4 to a conveyer 6 where one set of rollers 10 rotate it about its axis to unwind the outer turn 12 so that it passes along a table 16 beneath a cutter 24, a paper sheet dispenser 14, and a dispenesr 22 for delivering narrow strips 20 of steel sheet from a pair of drums 18, 18. The cutter 24 is lowered to stamp out two slots extending inwardly from both sides of the turn 12 and leave a small central connecting portion, the steel strips 20 and the superposed layer of paper 26, being dispensed from the drums 18, 18 and the dispenser 14 respectively. The paper 26 and strips 20 are then secured respectively, by an adhesive and spot welding, adjacent the cut-out slots in the turn 12, the strips 20 overhanging the respective side edges of the turn 12. The latter is then wound back on to the coil 2 with the paper 26 and the strips 20 interposed between the coil and the outer turn 12; and the cutter 24 is lowered again to sever the strips 20 and the paper which is torn away at the centre connecting portion. Two sheets of paper 34, 36 are then rolled into cylinders and sprung into the eye 28 of the coil with the outer ends of the sheets overhanging the ends of the coil. Two sheets 42, 44 of steel are similarly formed and expanded within the eye 28 to also overhang the coil ends. The coil is next moved axially, by the other set of rollers 8 with the free end of the turn 12 beneath the coil, to a banding machine 46 which applies metal bands 48. An overhead conveyer 50 now carries the coil through a tunnel 52 where the ends of the coil are first coated with a releasing agent 54 and then sprayed with a layer of polyurethane rigid setting-foam. The overhang projections at the ends of the coil prevent the foam from spreading over the outside of the coil. The coil finally passes to an automatic banding machine where one or more bands 60 are applied. In a modification, the outer turn is unwound only sufficiently to provide a lead-in for the paper which forms the outermost layer of the packaged coil; the overhanging strips 20 being laid outside the paper.
