Abstract

1275061 Boring heads STUART DAVIS MACHINES Ltd 25 June 1969 [25 June 1968] 30156/68 Heading B3C A rotatable tool head, e.g. a boring head, comprises a stiff diaphragm 25, a cutting tool holder 27 secured to a face of the diaphragm and means for applying a force to the diaphragm to distort the face to tilt the holder and thus adjust the position of a tool when held in the holder. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) an axially movable actuator 13 carries a part 17 having a tip 20 which bears on a lever 21 engaging a stud 26 at the centre of the diaphragm, which centre is eccentric relative to the axis of the head. Axial movement of the actuator 13, to the left in the Figure, thus causes the diaphragm to assume a conical form. The holder 27 is secured to the front face of the diaphragm only on one side of a diameter of the diaphragm, thus leaving a slit 28 between that face and the holder, whereby distortion of the diaphragm causes the holder axis to assume an inclination relative to the axis of the head, thereby adjusting the disposition of a tool 16 relative to the head. A precompressed spring 32 prevents backlash between the lever 21 and part 17. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), the tip 20 bears on a first lever 36 which transmits force to a second lever 21 through a projection 37 on the latter. In another embodiment (Fig. 5), a closed cavity between the diaphragm and a rear plate 12 of the head is filled with a suitable hydraulic liquid. Axial movement of a member 42 under the action of actuator 13 causes force to be transmitted by the liquid to the diaphragm. In a modification of the Fig. 3 embodiment, levers 21, 36 have intermeshing gear teeth. The head may be a facing head. Copending Application No. 30155/68 is referred to.
