Abstract
1,274,859. Recording and playback of cinefilm sound tracks. N. A. JAMES. 17 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968/, No. 60010/68. Heading G5R. In a sound film, the sound corresponding to each frame is recorded on the film adjacent that frame to facilitate editing. During filming, Fig. 1 this is achieved by first temporarily recording the sound on a magnetic drum 5, disc or tape while the corresponding frame is being exposed and then, after an interval during which the corresponding frame of the film has attained a certain velocity, transferring the sound recording from head 7 to the film at 8 (as a magnetic or optical modulation). During projection, Fig. 2 - (not shown), of the film, first the sound track is read (3<SP>1</SP>) and transferred to e.g., a magnetic drum (6<SP>1</SP>) and then, when the corresponding frame reaches the projection gate (A), the sound is reproduced from the drum and transmitted to an amplifier and a speaker (9<SP>1</SP>). In the embodiments, the heads are positioned so that sound is read after a part revolution of the drum, an erase head 10 being provided. In the projector, the position of the pick-up head (7<SP>1</SP>) is adjustable, and a second head (11<SP>1</SP>) is provided in such a position as to produce soundpicture separation of e.g. 18 or 56 frames, as required by conventional films.
