Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Substrates are coated with an unsaturated polyester resin composition comprises a condensation polymer of a polybasic carboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol which polymer also contains an antioxidative polyunsaturated hydrocarbon moiety (i.e. a hydrocarbon chain which contains at least two carbon-carbon double bonds and which in the presence of oxygen spontaneously forms hydroperoxides, and from 10 to 80% by weight based on the polymer of α, #-ethylenically unsaturated monomer in which the polymer is soluble, the polybasic carboxylic acid comprising at least 15 mole % of pumaric acid and being essentially free of α, #-ethylenic unsaturated other than that provided by the fumaric acid, and the condensation polymer comprising from 15 to 65% by weight based on the polymer of antioxidative polyunsaturated hydrocarbon moieties of at least 18 covalently linked carbon atoms chain length. In the Examples steel panels are coated.
