1,274,636. Muconic and adipic acid derivatives. YEDA RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 18 March, 1970 [21 March, 1969], No. 13118/70. Heading C2C. Muconic acid derivatives of the formula wherein R is a cyano or -CO-R<SP>1</SP> group, R<SP>1</SP> being a C 1-8 -alkoxy, aryloxy or an optionally substituted amino group; e.g. the novel compounds N,N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl - trans,trans - mucono diamide and trans,trans - dibenzyl muconate; are obtained by dehydrohalogenating solid crystalline compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a halogen atom; by reaction with ammonia or organic amines in the gas or vapour phase. The adipic acid derivatives of the formula may be obtained by reacting the corresponding unsaturated compounds with elementary halogen. Muconic acid may be obtained by hydrolysing muconodinitrile obtained by the above process. Dibenzyl - 3,4 - dibromoadipate, which may be used as a starting material in the above process, may be obtained by esterifying 3,4- dibromoadipic acid with benzyl alcohol.
