Abstract

1,274,576. Applying heat-shrinkable foil hoods to large packages. C. KELLER U. CO. 12 Sept., 1970, No. 43717/70. Heading B8C. In a device for applying a hood 15a of heatshrinkable foil to large packages of goods, particularly stacks of bricks 22, a tube of heat shrinkable foil is fed by rollers 16 from a roll 15 to a unit 21 which welds and cuts the tube to form a succession of flattened hoods of the required length and pass each hood through a pair of open rollers 12a, 12b, to a suction device 14a, 14b which pivots open to spread the mouth of the hood at the same time as a frame 2, guided in a main frame 1, moves upward to introduce a cluster of four vertically extending rods 6a-9a carried thereby into the hood, a slide rail 10, movable with the frame 2, operating linkage 11 which moves the two rollers 12a, 12b together. The latter then feed the hood 15a downwardly over the rods 6a-9a, which are carried respectively at the free ends of arms 6-8 pivoted to the frame 2 a chain and motor mechanism 18-20 pivoting the arms 6-8 apart so that the hood is fully opened and stretched. The frame 2 is then lowered to place the stretched hood completely over the package 22 the lowering being continued until the rods 6a-9a can be withdrawn from below the hood 15a, and then moved further apart a short distance for subsequent transfer back to the top of the package as rollers 6b-9b, on their outer ends, glide along opposed sides of the package. The rods 6a-9a are covered in plastics, may be collapsible to assist withdrawal from the lower end of the sheath, and can be individually rotatably mounted.
