Novel compounds of Formula I (in which Ar is (X<SP>1</SP>) n -substituted aryl, R is H, C 1-8 alkyl or (X<SP>2</SP>) n -substituted aryl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are both H or taken together represent oxo, Y is O, S, SO or SO 2 each of X, X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>2</SP> is H, C 1-8 alkyl, C 1-8 alkoxy, NH 2 , di-(C 1-8 alkyl). amino, halogen, C 1-8 alkylthio, OH, CN, NO 2 or CF 3 , n is 1 to 3, r is 0 to 3 and A is ethylene and their optical antipodes, are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula II with a compound of Formula III (in which Y<SP>1</SP> is O or S) or reacting a compound of Formula IV with a compound of formula Hal-A-OH (in which Hal is a halogen atom), if required, reducing a resulting compound I in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> together represent oxo, to form a corresponding compound I in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are both H, and/or, if required, oxidizing a compound I in which Y is S with potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide to form a corresponding compound I in which Y is SO or SO 2 . Compounds I have central nervous system modifying activity and pharmaceutical compositions containing them may be administered orally or parenterally. Compounds I also have antibacterial activity and are useful as disinfectants in the form of their aqueous solutions or suspensions.
