Abstract

1,274,466. Selectively plasticized polymer compositions. AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE. 11 June, 1969 [11 June, 1968], No. 29539/69. Heading C3P. Compositions useful for forming rigid and impact resistant articles comprise (I) an addition copolymer comprising units of two or more different monomer species and (II) at least one addition homopolymer of one of said monomer species or an addition copolymer, differing from (I), but of two of said monomer species, the polymerized units of one species being selectively plasticized while the units of the other species are not substantially modified. Component (I) may be a random, block or graft copolymer and component (II), when a copolymer, preferably contains a smaller number of different monomer species than does copolymer (I). The following polymer combinations are exemplified (a) styrene-methyl methacrylate random or block copolymer and polymethyl methacrylate, (b) styrene-methyl methacrylate random or block copolymer, polymethy] methacrylate and polystyrene, and (c) polystyrene-polyvinyl chloride graft copolymer (obtained by linking preformed polystyrene molecules to preformed polyvinyl chloride molecules) and polyvinyl chloride. Spcified selective plastioizers are (a) for styrene units: diisobutyl azelate, 2-n-butoxyethyl stearate, polyester-type plasticizers, polyvinyl ether based plasticizers, and coumarone-indene resins; (b) for methyl methacrylate units: mixed polyalkylene oxides, e.g. ethylene oxide-propylene oxide polymers, and polyester-type plasticizers; and (c) for vinyl chloride units: hydroabietic alcohol, diethylene glycol dipelargonate, N- ethyltoluene sulphonamide and polyester-type plasticizers.
