Abstract

1,274,242. Welding by pressure. R. M. GWYNN, and T. THEMY. 13 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 24419/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A three-component electrode, esepcially for electrolytic use, comprises a substrate of Ti or Nb, a surface layer of a platinum group metal, and an intermediate layer of Ta or Nb to which the surface layer and substrate are bonded, the metal of the intermediate layer having a melting point higher than that of the substrate and the surface layer. The intermediate layer may be from 0À0003 to 0À01 inch thick, and the surface layer from 0À0003 to 0À005 inch thick. The surface layer may be of Pt, Rh, Ir, Ru, or alloys thereof. Apparatus and a method for bonding the layers to the substrate may be generally as described in Specification 1,253,217. The substrate may be coated in one or more passes, with overlap where more than one pass is employed. Although the entire substrate may be so coated, if desired, those parts which are left uncoated may be protected by resin. Terminal posts may be welded to the substrate.
