[Also in Division A2] A hard candy or "boiled sweet" type base for medicaments is prepared by adding a sparingly soluble calcium salt and a magnesium salt (e.g. Ca or Mg gluconate, Mg glycerophosphate) to an aqueous syrup containing glucose and sucrose to which the medicament is added and which is then heated to no more than 120‹C to remove sufficient of the water. The solubility of the Ca salt should be no more than 3 parts by weight in 100 parts of water at 15‹C, 0.35 to 0.70g (calculated as Ca) being a suitable quantity for 100g of finished product.
