[Also in Division F1] In an internal combustion engine distributer drive mechanism comprising a helical gear 22 on a distributer drive shaft 20 meshing a helical gear 24 on a cam-shaft 26, the gear 22 is biased into continuous engagement with gear 24 by oil under pressure acting on the end of the drive shaft 20. A shaft extension 32 is pinned to the lower end of shaft 20 and is journalled in a bore 30 in a cylinder head 10. Oil is supplied under pressure to the lower end of bore 30 and in addition to preventing backlash between the gears, the oil enters the clearance between the bearing surfaces of the shaft extension 32 and bore 30, and viscous shearing of the oil, as the shaft rotates, exerts a controlled drag on the distributer drive shaft.
