Abstract
1,273,862. Removal of slag from ladles. REPUBLIC STEEL CORP. 30 June, 1970 [11 July, 1969], No. 31679/70. Heading F4B. Slag is removed from molten steel in a ladle (20, Fig. 1) by suction apparatus incorporating an uptake tube 14 leading to a chamber formed by an upper section 28 with cap 30 disposed sealably on a slag bore 24 and connected to a slag trap 26 incorporating vertical pipes 42 and 44 having a valve 54 and a pipe 12 connected to a vacuum source, a baffle 22 being inserted in the chamber in the path of said slag. The tube 14 comprises a section 14a with a widening aperture 33 forming part of the chamber, and, removably attached thereto, a tube 14c of steel, graphite or ceramic lined with layers 14d of char resistant paper, e.g. Kraft interleaved with asbestos. The lower slag contacting section comprises another paper layer 14e, 14f. The tube also carries a probe (34, Fig. 1) projecting slightly therefrom and connected to an electrical source to indicate when the metal surface is reached.
