Abstract

1,273,572. Power-driven lawn mower. WEBB LAWNMOWERS Ltd. 28 Aug., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 42253/68. Heading A1F. [Also in Division F2] The mower power unit (not shown) drives a traction land roller or wheel 10 and a rotary cutting cylinder (not shown) through normally engaged belt-and-pulley drives 14, 20, 16 and 14, 21, 15, the operator having three hand lever controls: the first control being operative to disengage both drives, the second control being operative to disengage only the traction drive 14, 21, 16, and the third control being operative to engage only the traction drive 14, 21, 16 when both drives are disengaged by the first control, the second control being remotely positioned and requiring force to be maintained thereon by the operator in operation, so that it is substantially impossible for the operator to place a hand near the rotating cutter while holding the mower stationary with the second control. The first control has a catch whereby it can be retained in the operated condition. The first control comprises a cable 28 having a sheath which swings an arm 24 clockwise about its pivot 25 against a spring 26 acting thereon, the arm 24 carrying a cutter jockey wheel 22 and an adjustable link 41 connected by pin- and-slot 40, 47 to an articulated arm 34 urged by spring 36 about pivot 37 and carrying a traction jockey wheel 35. The second control comprises a cable 48 having a sheath 51 which is acted on by a return spring 52 and which swings the arm 34 anticlockwise. The third control comprises a cable 53 having a core 56 which swings the upper part 38 of the arm 34 clockwise about its pivot 40. Pinion 19 drives the roller 10 via an internally toothed gear. The power unit may be a battery or mains electric motor, or an internal combustion engine.
