Abstract

1,273,523. Comminuting apparatus. TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 4 June, 1969 [5 March, 1968], No. 10606/68. Heading B2A. [Also in Division Cl] A refractory material is comminuted by being passed in particulate form through a stable arc plasma. The examples comprise comminution of titanium diboride powder injected on a stream of argon and shielded by an argon/nitrogen stream; and reaction of boron oxide and titania with calcium fluoride. Reactant carbon in such forms as activated charcoal, graphite or hydrocarbon gases is employed, and the titanium diboride product may be discharged directly into an aluminium melt to provide dispersion strengthening.
