Abstract

1,273,206. Cutter head for chipping wood. KLARA LINCK. 4 July, 1969 [15 March, 1969], No. 33806/69. Heading B5L. A cutter head 2 for the profile chipping of round timber I comprises a plurality of groups of blades 4, 5 rotatable about an axis which extends normally of a support surface 9 located adjacent one end of the cutter head, the surface 9 being arranged to engage the machined surface 3 of the timber when the cutter head is in use, the cutting tips of the blades 4, 5 being located on at least one imaginary spiral line in a truncated conical surface 14 tapering in a direction towards said one end of the cutter head. In the embodiment shown, a pair of cutter heads is arranged to form parallel machined surfaces 3 on the timber 1. Each head comprises a drive shank 12, a body 11, a plurality of blades 4, 5 carried by the body, and a disc 6 mounted on the body 11 so as to be freely rotatable and to from the surface 9. The blades 4 are tearing blades which cut chips transversely from the timber 1, and the blades 5 cut parallel to the wood fibre and remove the chips. In a second embodiment the disc 6 is replaced by a ring and the blades are mounted on ribs which extend tangentially to an imaginary cylinder within the ring. The member forming the support surface may be partly frusto-conical or rounded.
