Abstract

1,273,205. Fibres of inorganic oxidic material. CIMENTS LAFARGE. 3 July, 1969 [2 Sept., 1968], No. 33573/69. Headings C1A and C1J. Fibres are obtained by fibrillating a molten oxide composition having wollastonite (calcium metasilicate) as its principal constituent and comprising the oxide analysis by weight 40- 60% SiO 2 , 0-15% Al 2 O 3 , more than 30% CaO 0-3% Fe 2 O 3 , 0-8% alkali metals, and the percentage of SiO 2 being greater than that of CaO. The fibres can be made by subjecting a stream of the molten oxide composition at at least 200‹ C. above its melting point, e.g. at 1500-1555‹ C. to the action of a jet of fluid, e.g. steam or air, impinging on the stream. -The jet of fluid can be directed at right angles to the stream of molten oxides and can impinge tangentially on the stream of oxides.
