1,273,185. Disc &c. brakes. VOITH GETRIEBE K.G. 27 Aug., 1969 [31 Aug., 1968], No. 42685/69. Hedaing F2E. A composite hydrodynamic-mechanical brake includes a hydrodynamic brake and a disc brake, the friction surface or surfaces 4 of the disc brake being upon the rotor of the hydrodynamic brake approximately at the same radius as the working chamber or chambers 7, 7<SP>1</SP> of the hydrodynamic brake and the friction surface or surfaces being separated from the working chamber or chambers by a wall of small thickness and large radial extent to thereby have a low absolute thermal resistance. As shown, stator blade rings 16, 17 are located between rotor blade rings 5, 11 of grey cast iron and on which are formed the friction surfaces 4 these latter being engageable by brake shoes 44, 45 carried on levers 42, 43 connected by an adjustable-length link 41 and movable towards the surfaces 4 by a pneumatic brake cylinder 36 the piston 37 of which pivots a bell-crank lever 38; upon the release of air pressure a spring in the cylinder returns the shoes to an inoperative position, the levers being spread apart by a return spring 47. Heat generated by the disc brake is transferred through the walls of the rotors 5, 11 to the working fluid, i.e. water, circulated in the chambers 7, 7<SP>1</SP>.
