Abstract

1,272,935. Antiskid braking systems. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 15 Aug., 1969 [22 Aug., 1968], No. 40221/68. Heading F2F. In an antiskid fluid braking system in which the vehicle braking is dependent on vehicle deceleration and may also be dependent on the load, the wheel cylinders 17 are connected to a master cylinder 10 through a valve 13, the valve member 18 of which is unseated through a plunger 22 by the differential pressure across a diaphragm 27 which separates servomotor chambers 25, 26 being air and vacuum chambers respectively, air passing to chamber 25 through a first normally closed valve 30 opened on reception of a skid signal and a second normally open valve 31 having a closure member 32 coupled to a diaphragm 33 of a control device communicating on either side of diaphragm 33 with chambers 25, 26. On detection of a skid signal valve 30 opens, air passing to chamber 25 and diaphragm 27 and plunger 22 move rightwardly to close orifice 23 to reduce fluid pressure at the wheel cylinders 17. The differential pressure across diaphragm 33 also causes member 32 to close orifice 38 against the action of a biasing spring 39 and air pressure in chamber 25 is released through bleed passage 29 to release the brakes. A pivoted weight 41 is coupled to a rod 43 having a flange engaging a spring 44 which also engages a flange of a sleeve 45 and acts in opposition to spring 39. As the vehicle deceleration increases, weight 41 swings forward and the diaphragm 33 is forced downwards by rod 43 so that a lesser differential pressure is required to close port 38 and utlimately release the brakes. A bell crank 46 responsive to vehicle load is pivoted to the vehicle body at 47 and to an axle through an arm 49 and is coupled by a tension spring 50 to weight 41 so that an increased loading pivots arm 49 and restricts the swing of weight 41 through the spring 50, and therefore a higher differential pressure is necessary to close port 38. The weight 41 may be situated in a housing with a liquid to damp the movement of the weight.
