Abstract

1,272,710. Granulating. VERENIGDE KUNSTMESTFABRIEKEN MEKOG-ALBATROS N.V. 9 Sept., 1970 [11 Sept., 1969], No. 43167/ 70. Heading A5B. [Also in Divisions B5 and Cl] A powdery substance is granulated by spreading it in a layer which is moved horizontally while adding an aqueous polyacrylamide solution dropwise, each drop forming a moist lump of coherent powder separated from other moist lumps by unmoistened powder, the lumps then being shaped into grains by a rotary movement and dried. The powder may be a fertilizer or pharmaceutical e.g. potassium chloride and/or potassium nitrate and/or diammonium phosphate, magnesium sulphate or acetylsalicylic acid. The solution may contain another agglomeration promoter e.g. a cellulose or starch adhesive such as carboxymethyl cellulose, or urea or ammonium nitrate. The layer may be formed on a conveyor belt or rotating plate. The lumps may be covered on top by dry powder e.g. by sprinkling or by means of a transverse bar. The sieves to separate the lumps from the powder may be vibrated. The grains may be formed in a rotating drum which is internally rough or ribbed or in a cylinder of metal gauze which may be surrounded coaxially by a closed cylindrical wall, the space therebetween being divided by partitions, preferably radial or parallel to the axis of rotation.
