Abstract

1,272,598. Severing hocks from poultry carcases. ROSS POULTRY Ltd. 9 June, 1970 [14 May, 1969], No. 24651/69. Heading A2U. Apparatus for severing the hocks of poultry comprises a pair of relatively movable plates each with at least one V-shaped cut-out portion constituting two cutting edges and arranged to form a diamond-shaped aperture with a V- shaped portion of the other plate, the arrangement being such that a knuckle joint may be located by the edges of a V-shaped portion so that it is severed between the ball and socket of the joint when the diamond-shaped aperture is diminished in size by relative movement of the plates. As shown, a plate I fixed to a frame 9 has two V-shaped portions 3, 4 opening at its upper edge, and a movable plate 2 slidable behind the plate 1 in guides 10, 11 has corresponding V-shaped portions 5, 6 at its lower edge, all of the V-shaped portions being chamfered to provide cutting edges. A preferably transparent guard 25 with apertures 26, 27 is provided in front of the plates, and the plate 2 is connected by a rod 12, urged upwardly by a spring 16, to foot operating means. Operation may, alternatively, be by hand or automatically. The plate 2 may be locked in the closed position by a member 23. The rear of the apparatus is fitted with a guard (not shown) and a sloping plate 28 for the conveyance of severed hocks.
