Abstract

1,272,029. Deflecting light. MULLARD Ltd. 7 Dec., 1970, No. 58019/70. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G5] A scanning device comprises a light guide GL operating by total internal reflection, a transparent member M spaced from the guide and parallel thereto, and means T for causing an elastic wave to propagate along either the guide GL (as shown) or the member M, Fig. 4 (not shown), whereby local surface distortions S thereof reduce the distance d between the guide GL and member M and permit light from a source S propagating along guide GL to escape therefrom through the member M by frustrated total internal reflection (the phenomenon wherein when light transmissive surfaces are spaced by a distance of less than a wavelength, light energy is coupled from one surface to the other). The guide and member M are suitably of glass and the light and elastic wave may travel in the same or opposite directions, both being absorbed at the other end of the device, e.g. by an elastic wave absorber A. A parallel array of such devices, or a single device with mechanical means for effecting a frame scan component, may be used in a television receiver or a radar display, in which case the source S may be a white light source and a Kerr cell, or a modulated laser, or three coloured sources and modulators which are combined via dichroic mirrors. The elastic waves are either bulk waves, e.g. from quartz or BaTiO 3 transducers applying endwise or lateral pressure to the guide or member M, or they may be surface waves, e.g. from an interdigital comb transducer. The constant spacing required between the guide and the member M may be produced by grinding their opposed surfaces together, or by using glass fibre techniques such as starting with a thick glass rod within a thick glass tube and drawing both down to the required size and spacing. In either construction, ribs or spacers are provided.
