Abstract

1,271,650. Producing foamed resin aggregates; laminates. BPB INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Aug., 1969 [22 Aug., 1968], No. 40265/68. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division C1] A coarse light-weight aggregate for cementitious compositions, e.g. concrete, is produced by extruding a foamed urea-formaldehyde resin composition in rod form on to a moving surface, chopping the rod into pieces, and drying the extrudate, the resin composition being allowed to cure after extrusion. Preferably, the extrudate is deposited on to a conveyer from one or more extrusion heads. These heads may oscillate over the width of the conveyer, the zig-zag rods so formed being cut by a plurality of knives and the foamed pieces falling from the end of the conveyer into a hot air fluid bed drier. Cementitious materials mentioned are Portland and rapid hardening cement, hemihydrate or anhydrous calcium sulphate plaster and the cementitious composition may include dense aggregates such as sand or fly ash and reinforcing additives such as polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylates and copolymer resins or resins based on synthetic carboxylic acids of petroleum origin. In examples, (i) a urea-formaldehyde foam containing at least 10<SP>6</SP> cells per c.c. and hydrochloric acid as hardener is extruded as a zig-zag rod and is cut before curing is complete, (ii) a rod of similar composition remains on the belt until fully cured, is stored for 24 hours to allow evaporation of water and is then cut, the product so formed having a continuous skin, (iii) the rod is dried and thereby simultaneously cured on the belt. A particular cementitious composition comprises 500 parts by weight of cement, 50 parts by weight of aggregate and 0.5 part by weight of cellulose ether. For the production of a light-weight building board or panel, a composition comprising 500 parts by weight of a hemihydrate plaster, 50 parts by weight of aggregate and 50 parts by weight of an emulsion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and a vinyl ester based on synthetic carboxylic acids of petroleum origin is prepared and then placed between sheets of lining paper. Generally, building boards may be produced having a core of the aggregate and cementitious material between paper or other facing sheets.
