Abstract

1,271,406. Polyester epoxy compositions. ASHLAND OIL Inc. 23 April, 1969 [24 April, 1968], No. 20777/69. Headings C3B and C3R. A composition comprises (I) one or more polyesters having an acid number #50 prepared by reacting a polycarboxylic acid, polyhydric alcohol and a functional modifier which renders the polyester soluble in xylol or mineral spirits, (II) one or more polyepoxides reactive with I, (III) xylol or mineral spirits and (IV) at least one solvent which renders the composition miscible and which has the formula R<SP>1</SP>(OCH 2 CH 2 ) n H in which n is 2 or 3 and R<SP>1</SP> is H or CH 3 CO. The ratio by wt. of I : II may be 1 : 3 to 3 : 1. The composition may have a non-volatile content of 40-70% by wt. At least 15% of IV may be 2- ethoxyethyl acetate and at least part of IV may be 2-ethoxyethanol. Mineral spirits may be present in an amount sufficient to cause the reaction mixture to reflux at 275-450‹ F. The presence of IV serves to decelerate the increase in viscosity compared to mixtures of only I, II and III. Uses.-Coating compositions.
