Apparatus for coating either the upper or lower surfaces of box flaps with glue comprises an applicator roller 50 driven by a unidirectional motor 48 the arrangement being such that if the lower surfaces are to be coated the flaps are fed over the roller via a guide channel 64c and if the upper surfaces are to be coated the flaps are fed under the roller through a channel 59c, the roller 50, drive 48 and pressure members 60, 70 being mounted on a frame 18 which can be moved vertically on a lead screw 19 so that the appropriate feed channel is adjacent the line of feed of box flaps. Glue may be fed to the roller from a nozzle (not shown) which sprays directly on to the peripheral surface. An adjustable doctor blade 75 is provided to spread the glue thus applied to the surface of the roller and excess glue is drained through a sump back to the supply container.
