Abstract

1,271,254. Making envelopes. BALTIMORE BUSINESS FORMS Inc. 13 June, 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 30172/69. Heading B5D. Addressed envelopes are produced by passing a continuous paper strip through a press which forms perforated and score lines thereon, then through a computerized printer, and finally through a folding and gluing means which forms the individual envelopes. The strip, Fig. 2, is perforated and scored to form a bottom panel 66, top panel 64, sealing flap 72, side flaps 74, 76 which carry perforations and are subsequently folded over panel 66, and side trim zones 60, 62 that are subsequently removed. Adhesively coated zones are shown shaded. After printing, the strip, stacked in zig-zag form, passes to pins 128 on an intermittently reciprocated belt driven by members 166, a slip-clutch, a rack 156, crank arm 154, crank 152, which is driven from a shaft 142 connected to the main motor. As the strip is moved forwards, line 30 on the strip is positioned beneath a cutter 190 which is raised and lowered by an eccentric 194 on the shaft 142 to sever each envelope. The envelopes pass to belts 210 supported by a plate 220 and reach a station 116 where pressure strips 266 press down the marginal strips of each envelope so that rolls 260, 268 grip and tear away the trim zones 60, 62. At the next station 118 the side flaps 74, 76 are folded over by a wedge block 270 and folding member 294. The leading edge of the envelope blank next passes between guides 306, 308 until it meets a stop 315 causing it to buckle along fold line 68, Fig. 16. Belts 210 and roller 320 now grip fold line 68 and draw the blank downwardly thereby folding the top panel over the bottom panel. The folded blank then passes to an adhesive securing station 122 where heaters 330 activate the adhesive and rolls driven by gears 336, 338 supply sealing pressure. The completed envelopes finally drop on to a conveyer and pass to an automatic filling and sealing station. The machine can be adjusted to accommodate envelopes of different sizes.
