Abstract

1,271,235. Polyurethane foam backings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 June, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 32164/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A floor covering is provided with a backing of polyurethane foam by the application of a reaction mixture comprising a polyether diol or triol having MW of 1500-7000, a blowing agent and a diisocyanatodiarylalkane composition containing 5-70% wt of elated polyaryl polyalkylene polyisocyanates of functionality greater than two. The polyether polyols are preferably polyoxypropylene diols or triols and more especially their oxyethylated derivatives. Up to 15% wt of the polyether polyol of a polyol of MW 100-600 having 2-8 OH groups may be included, oxypropylated glycerol being preferred. The blowing agent may be included in amounts between 0.5 and 60% wt and water and a variety of halogenated hydrocarbons are specified as suitable. Diisocyanatodiarylmethane compositions containing 20-60% wt of polyisocyanates are preferably used in admixture with 5-90% wt of tolylene diisocyanate to improve the tensile properties. The total polyisocyanates present preferably provide an isocyanate active hydrogen ratio of 0.8:1 to 1.3:1. Catalysts e.g. tertiary amines, amine salts or non basic organic compounds of metal, surface active agents, foam stabilisers, pigments, flame retardants and plasticisers may also be included. The mixture may be applied e.g. by spraying to linoleum, vinyl or carpets of woven or tufted structure composed of wool, regenerated cellulose fibres such as viscose rayon, polyamide, acrylic or polyester fibres.
