[Also in Division C3] A floor covering having an adherent backing of polyurethane flexible or semi flexible foam is produced by applying to the back of a flexible floor covering a foam-forming reaction mixture of a linear or slightly branched polyester polyol having a hydroxyl number of 40-100, a blowing agent and a blend of polyisocyanates containing 5-95% by weight of tolylene diisocyanate, the remainder being a diisocyanato diarylalkane composition containing 5-70% by weight of related polyaryl polyalkylene polyisocyanates of functionality greater than two, and allowing a foam to be formed on the back of the floor covering. The polyester polyol may be prepared from succinic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, phthalic, isophthalic or terephthalic acid or a mixture thereof and ethylene, propylene, diethylene, tetramethylene, pentamethylene, hexamethylene, decamethylene or 2, 2-dimethyltrimethyleneglycol or a mixture thereof which may be used in admixture with trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol or glycerol. The polyester polyol may contain amide groups introduced by including a diamine or aminoalcohol e.g. ethylene, hexamethylene or tolylene diamine or ethanolamine, in the polyester-forming reaction mixture. The diisocyanato diarylalkane composition may be a mixture of diisocyanatodiaryl alkanes and related polyaryl polyalkylene polyisocyanates of functionality greater than two prepared by phosgenation of crude diamino diaryl alkanes prepared by the reaction of aromatic amines, e.g. aniline, chloroanilines, toluidines or tolylene diamines or mixtures thereof with an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, or a ketone. The blowing agent may be water, methylene chloride, vinylidene chloride, trichlorofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoro methane, dichloromonofluoromethane, monochloro difluoromethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, 1, 1, 2 - trichloro - 1, 2, 2 - trifluoroethane, dibromo difluoromethane or monobromotrifluoroethane. The mixture may also contain a catalyst, e.g. triethylamine, dimethyl ethylamine. dimethyl ethanolamine, dimethylbenzylamine, dimethyl cyclohexylamine, dimethylphenyl ethylamine, tetramethyl - 1, 3 - butanediamine, triethylene diamine, N-alkylmorpholines, N-alkylpyrrolidines, N-alkylpiperidines, N, N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl - 4, 4<SP>1</SP> - bipiperidyl, 4-dimethylamine pyridine, dibutyl tin dilaurate or diacetate, stannous octoate or lead acetate or octoate, surface active agents, e.g. oxyethylated fatty alkyl phenols, oxyethylated fatty alcohols, salts of sulphuric acid derivatives of high molecular weight organic compounds and alkyl and aryl polysiloxanes and copolymers thereof with alkylene oxides, foam stabilising agents, colouring agents, flame retardants, e.g. trischloroethyl or trischloropropyl phosphates, plasticisers, e.g. dialkyl phthalates, and antioxidants, e.g. sterically hindered phenols and triphenyl phosphite. The mixture may be applied to the floor covering by spraying and the covering then heated by means of infra-red heaters. The floor covering may be polyvinylchloride, linoleum or a woven or tufted carpet comprising wool, viscose rayon, polyamide, acrylic or polyester fibres or mixtures thereof.
