Abstract

127,120. Ainley, H. F. June 5, 1918. Sack-sewing machines; folding-devices ; feeding work by wheels, chains, and other rotary devices. -A method of forming a hem on the margin of a piece, of fabric or en the end portions of tubes or bags to form bags or close the mouths of bags, as in the formation of sanitary towels in which case the hem may serve also as a loop, consists of two successive processes carried out by two independent devices, first for forming the turned-in portion, and the the body of the hem. The first stage of the operation is performed by an endless belt D running round pulleys d, d' over a fixed saddle E and under a resilientlymounted presser-foot F, between which and the band the article is fed. The band carries the article to a spirally twisted blade G which coacts with a folding blacle g to form the turned-in portion of the hem. The. article is then delivered by a roller n to an endles, band H formed with a spiral twist and coacting with a spirally twisted plate K which forms the body of the hem. The band H runs over pulleys I, J and co-acts with another band L running over the roller I and other rollers i to feed the article past the sewing-devices, and then release it. The folding and feeding de- and connecting-rod m, shafts 0, P, Q, R, and suitable gearing. The sewing-machine is supported on a frame A and is arranged so that its needle c reciprocates horizontally, the margin of the article to be sewn being presented in a vertical plane.
