Abstract
1,271,081. Rail vehicle couplings. GERMANY MINISTER OF TRANSPORT. 22 April, 1969 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 3519/68. Heading B7T. An arrangement for absorbing tractive and compressive forces applied to rail vehicle central buffer couplings comprises, attached to the end girder 1 of the vehicle underframe, a housing 5, and mounted on the front of the girder by pins 21a a beam buffer 2 having extending rearwardly therefrom destructible frame members 6, wherein the central buffer coupling is pivoted about a pin 14 to a member 13 located within the housing 5 such that a compressive force is conveyed through the member 13 to springs 16, the force if greater than a predetermined level then causing stops 38 on member 13 to meet stops 29 on frame members 6 transferring the load to buffer 2, but an even greater force causing the members 6 to break and the load to be transferred to the vehicle underframe via crossmembers within housing 5. Under a tractive load bolts 18 are drawn forwardly to compress springs 16, the spring forces passing through plates 15 to the rear end surfaces 10 of U-shaped members 9 bolted to the beam buffer 2. In the event of an excessive load, member 13 is pulled forwardly until it contacts steps 11 of member 9. Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) show an arrangement involving a screw coupling which is readily convertible to receive a central buffer coupling without structural alterations to the railway vehicle.
