Abstract

1,270,911. Cooker hoods. GEC-XPELAIR Ltd. 5 Jan., 1971 [26 Jan., 1970], No. 3706/70. Heading F4V. In a cooker hood having an electric motordriven fan within the hood casing, a safety device within the casing in series with the fan motor is responsive to smoke, flames, or excessive heat within the casing to de-energize the motor. In the form shown, a switch 10 which may be positioned at the hood inlet 4 includes a spring biased plunger which. is normally held closed by a fusible cap 12. Alternatively the switch may normally be held closed by a bimetallic element, or the fan motor may be connected in series with one or more temperature variable resistances. A fire-resistant pivoted damper 13 is positioned at the inlet 4 or in an exhaust duct 6 and is held in an open position by an electromagnet in series with the switch or by air pressure, against gravity or a spring, when the fan is operative. In another embodiment, a switch is normally held closed by a pivoted flap which itself is held in an open position by a fusible link or bimetallic element. A grease removing filter and an odour removing filter of activated carbon are provided. In yet another embodiment, a solid state electronic motor controller is in series with a photo-electric cell which is responsive to flames, or with an infra-red detector, or with a detector which normally receives radiation from a source and emits a signal when the source is obscured by smoke.
