Novel compounds I in which A is alkylene; R<SP>1</SP> is halo, CF 3 or alkoxy and R<SP>2</SP> is H while R<SP>3</SP> is 2-[N-methyl-N-(2- hydroxyethyl)amino]ethyl or NR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP> is 4- hydroxypiperidino; 4 - alkanoyloxy - alkyl - 1- piperazinyl; dialkyl - substituted - 4 - alkoxycarbonylalkyl - 1 - piperazinyl; trialkyl - substituted - 1 - piperazinyl; 4 - alkanoylalkyl - 1- piperazinyl; dialkyl - substituted - 4 - (alkynyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl )- 1 -piperazinyl; 4- benzoyl - 1 - piperazinyl; 4 - phenylalkyl - 1- piperazinyl optionally having two alkoxy groups on the benzene ring; or 4-alkyl-1-homopiperazinyl (dialkyl substituted and trialkyl substituted having the substituent alkyl groups at 2 of the 4 or 3 of the 5 available positions of the piperazine ring are prepared by: (1) reacting an appropriate 3-unsubstituted compound or its metal salt with a compound X-A-CONR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP> (X = halo); (2) reacting an appropriate 3- carboxyalkyl compound or a salt, acid halide, acid anhydride, amide, ester or azide thereof with an amine HNR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>; and (3) by acylation of an appropriate 4-hydroxypiperazino derivative. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I together with a suitable carrier and have anti-inflammatory and antiarrhythmic activity.
