Abstract

1,270,690. Quenching composition. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. Nov.28, 1969 [Nov.29, 1968], No.58200/69. Heading C7N. A composition for quenching iron and steel in induction and flame hardening comprises an aqueous solution having a content of 0À1-1À5% by weight of a water soluble amine or alkylolamine and 0À1-1À5% by weight of a monocarboxylic acid or alkoxy acetic acid having 7-11 carbon atoms, the amine or alkyloamine being in stoichiometric excess. Preferably the composition comprises 0À1-0À4% by weight of each component the amine: acid molar ratio being 1À1:1 to 2:1. Specified amines are mono, di, and tri-ethylamines, propyl, and isopropylamines, ethylenediamine, diethylene triamine, 2 amino ethylethyleneglycol, piperidine, morpholine, monoisopropanolamine, diisopropanolamine, tri-isopropanolamine, ethyldiethanolamine and mono, di, and triethanolamines. Specified acids are heptoic, octoic, nonoic, decoic and corresponding branched acids, benzoic, salicyclic and pentyloxy-, hexyloxy-, and octyloxy-acetic acids.
