Abstract

1,270,672. Stamping; making convoluted tubing. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 6 Jan., 1970 [12 Dec., 1968], No. 59085/68. Headings B3A and B3Q. In a method and apparatus for making convoluted tubes a tube 3 is slidably mounted on a mandrel 19 within a die which comprises a first die member 5 having an annular groove 16 defining half of the convolution to be produced and a second die member which consists of two half-die members 6, separable along a plane 11, having grooves 14 defining the complementary half of the convolution to be produced and grooves 13 for receiving convolutions already produced on the tube, fluid pressure is introduced into the tube 3 via a channel 25 in the mandrel to bulge the section of tube 3 between seals 20 and the two die members the bulge being of greater axial length but less height than the convolution to be produced and then, when the pressure within the tube reaches a predetermined value, moving the two die members towards each other to form the convolution. After forming the convolution the pressure inside the tube is reduced and the die members moved so that a part 33 abuts stops 34. The two half-die members 6 are separated at the plane 11 and the die members moved back so that half-die members abut a body part 1 before they are brought together to enclose the convolution just formed in the first annular groove 13. Die member 5 is then withdrawn to the position shown in Fig. 1 ready for the production of the next convolution.
