Abstract
127,063. Cederberg, I. W., Backstrom, H. M., and Kyhlberger, G. A. Jan. 26, 1918 Ammonia from mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen, catalytic production of.-Ammonia is produced at temperatures below 400‹ C. and at pressures exceeding 250 atmospheres by treating mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen with a catalytic agent consisting of one or more of the following: metallic copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, mercury, gallium, indium, thallium, germanium, tin, lead, arsenic, antimony, or bismuth, or a compound of such a metal which is capable of reacting with nitrogen or hydrogen or both to form ammonia, or a compound which under the conditions of the catalytic operation yields either the metal or a compound such as those indicated above. Examples of catalysts mentioned are copper asbestos, zinc powder, mercury nitridebromide, 2HgBr2Hg3N2, copper hydride, zinc amide, copper ferrocyanide. In an example, copper oxide is precipitated on asbestos and heated in ammonia at 325‹ C., which produces cuprous nitride. This is used as a catalyst at a pressure of 680 atmospheres.
